Modeling at Any Age

This is Lani Ridenhour, one of the 10 finalists of the MORE/Wilhelmina over 40 Model Search - it's hard to believe she is OVER 40 years old!!!

I just had a teleseminar with the Glam Girls from http://www.fabulousafter40.com on Monday night, and it went great! We spoke for one hour about all facets of the modeling industry such as: The categories of modeling, how to find model agencies around the country, how to dress, what pictures to take and MORE! There was even a caller named Kim from Iowa, calling to inform us that she was 40 years old, and booked a bridal show through her modeling agency in her hometown! That certainly proves that the modeling industry is exploding with possibilities of modeling work for people of all ages. I was so happy to hear this! Thank-you Glam Girls for an incredible interview!!!!

I've been starting kind of fast and furious in this industry, but I am largely cluless. I walked into an upscale lingerie shop and the owner walked over and asked me to model in her next runway show! Ummm, OK sure, you got it! :) So now I'm getting some good commercial shots this week. I have a great photographer I worked with in my 20's for TFP. Now I am 41 and he thinks much more suited to the market Im shooting for. After Friday if all goes well, I'll have a few good prints in my hand. Should I send them to Wilhemina? To the new Faces division or the "S" division? Then, If they like me they will want to meet me in person, right? I am only a train ride away from manhattan and more than willing to do all the preparation.. and I can take rejection; I do Not get all offended and sad. Any advice on what I can do to play my cards RIGHT and not waste time or make myself the fool? Thanks!
Laura

Ok, you need my book REALLY badly! lol You are funny. Until the book comes out, let me try and help you out...the "New Faces" division in a modeling agency is only for models who are ages 13 - 23 or so. You are definitely in the "Sophisticated Division" age and you should also be trying for commercial print as well. Put these divisions on the envelope of the pictures that you send in, for example "Attention: Soph. Division" and so on. ALSO - you DO NOT NEED professional pictures, the agents actually PREFER to see natural, NON-professional pictures. You should send them to Wilhelmina, Ford, Bella, and CESD modeling agencies. CESD and Bella are only commercial print, but you still need to put "Attention: commercial print" on the envelope, and the others you should send to their sophisticated AND commercial print divisions, but make sure you send them separately. And finally, yes - they will want to see you in person, just remember: not too much make-up, SIMPLE clothing, and natural-looking hair. Also, where do you live? There is a good agency in Philadelphia if you are near there. GOOD LUCK!! Thanks for blogging.

Hello Everyone,

My name is Lani Ridenhour.
Judy spotted me out of thousands of women at an open call in September. More/Wilhelmina 40+ Model Search in Mahattan.
I was very natural and was simply dressed, with NO jewelry. I often feel, that aspiring models tend to over think their appearance. I know that Judy's new book " Break Into Modeling for under $20.00". Would be most helpful. By the way, 15,000 women entered the contest nationwide. Only 10 women made it to the finals and I was ONE! Any Q's feel free to e-mail Judy. Good Luck, Lani~

Hi Lani,
You were so fantastic at the finals event... I was there and we spoke at the end of the night.. I know you are going to be a star! keep up the good work.

Thanks, Judy... I WILL be getting your book. Hopefully by the time it comes out I will already have had some success! There was some confusion on MDC regarding the new faces division at Wilhemina.(which is why I wasn't sure.) Yes, I have MUCH to learn.. I tend to wear too much makeup just from nerves, for one thing. I dress ok. (at least I hope so). :)
Thanks again!

Hi Shah! Unfortunately your link ran off of the page so I went to your website instead, but I can't really tell too much what you look like from that. If you could send me some more pictures to themodelexpert@aol.com, that would be great. Try to send natural looking ones, without a lot of make-up. Also, how old are you? How tall are you? What is your dress size and hips? Do you have an agency in La.? Because if you have a mother agency, you don't want to do anything without speaking to them first. Email me, and we will go from there! Thanks for blogging!!

Hi Judy
I'm a guy just so you know. Thanks for the helpful blog! Can you give some tips for sending in photos to agencies and what they are looking for in guys?
What do agencies like to see from guys looks-wise and personality-wise?
Thanks

Hi my name is Emily, and I am 16 years old. Ever since I can remember I have always wanted to model, but recently I sort of came back to reality and thought of an idea that might be a bit more realistic. I want to be a casting director! I really have no idea how to get started though, living in good old Iowa! I want to find models for magazines and fashion shows, and also do movies. Is that all related? Someday I would love to work for Ford , Elite or another great agency and be the person who goes through all the mail with pictures of people wanting to model, sort of like a scout? I really don't know... I think what I just said was a lot of different jobs all mixed together as one, and I don't even know if a casting director is the right title for it all? Any advice you could give me about the industry and getting started or the difference of the jobs I described would really help!
Thanks so much, Emily

Judy Goss said...

Hi Emily! I will get back to you tomorrow with a more detailed answer-I am out of town at the moment. Thanks for blogging!

Judy Goss said...

Dear Emily,
My, you are ambitious!! And that is just what you need to get ahead in the modeling industry - or any other industry for that matter! First of all, don't worry about the fact that you're from "Iowa" New York City is made up of people from EVERYWHERE, and how they get there is all different ways. Are you near a larger town that has modeling agencies? I would start there, and ask them if you can intern in the summers while you are still in school. That is the best place you can start! In the meantime, read all of the fashion magazines that you can, study the models, and learn the "feel and look" of the business. www.models.com is a great place to start! To answer your other question, the film industry and the modeling industry are two separate entities when it comes to casting. Either you're a casting director for movies or you're one for print work. If you want to get into film, that's another story. A scout? That's separate from a casting director, and you can start that on your own while you are going to high school! Get my book when it comes out - this is the process (my 4-step process) that SCOUTS USE WHEN THEY FIND A POTENTIAL FACE FOR MODELING. All you need is a digital camera and a computer!! Agents PREFER to see non-professional pictures - it's true. I teach all about lighting, poses, clothing ,etc. down to the last detail. And scouts get paid per model - kind of like a finder's fee. But you can NEVER charge the model for that service - that is totally unethical. Modeling agencies don't care WHERE they get new faces from, they just care if that potential new face has star quality. And they want the pictures that I teach people to take in my book. After sending a few people's pictures into modeling agencies you will find out what each agency is looking for - they all have their own taste in models. For example, Elite looks for the more clean-cut, classic beauty, and New York Models likes a more funkier edge. My book also tells you the exact measurements a female or male model has to be for high fashion - which is what you would be targeting. There are endless stories of people being scouted like this, and they end up getting advanced - meaning, they have to eventually pay it back from work they get - free plane tickets, hotel, and pictures from the agency (depending on how much the agency wants them of course). This is very common in New York and Europe - the agency will take on the expenses at first until a model starts working...but again, this is all in my book, so use it as a resource to break into the industry on the casting or scouting end of things. As far as casting goes, if you can get into a college in NYC, then you can try to get an intern job at one of the magazines. It'll be tough, but EVERY industry is competitive! All it takes is drive, determination, and a passion for the industry. GOOD LUCK! You'll make it - you're doing the right thing by asking all of those questions! I'm already proud of you. Let me know if this all makes sense, or if you have any more questions. Judy

Perle De Willa said...

Hi!
I've been trying to break into the industry with a few disadvantages.
A) I live in an area that isn't really near a city where I could find jobs.
B) I'm only 13, so people don't quite take me seriously and tend to say that I am too young.
C) My height. I'm only 5'6 1/2, which of course is too short for editorial. Right now I don't really care what kind of modeling I do. I really just want to.

I created a models.com portfolio last month and have been asking for advice/ tips, and really just anything that they can tell me there. So far I've only gotten negative comments, which I do realize you get a lot of in this industry. I've also gotten a lot of comments on my nose, as it is very big. My portfolio address is http://portfolios.models.com/317532/. Any advice that you could give me would be wonderful!
Thank You!
Willa

Hello Laura,

Thank you so much !! Good Luck and please take Judy's advice. I wish this information was available to me sooner. I hope by seeing me, you were inspired.

Lani~

Judy Goss said...

Dear Willa,
Yes, you are a bit young to start marketing yourself for high fashion. You really need to reach the 5'7" mark AT LEAST before you can really send pictures into agencies in New York and other competitive markets. I can't say for sure about your nose, when models like Irina Lazareanu http://supermodels.nl/irinalazareanu/pictures/1 and Omahvra (she's on www.newyorkmodels.com website) have made it big in the modeling industry, and they are ANYTHING but the typical beauties. You just never know in this industry, so you at least have to try. I personally went to Ford's open call FOUR times and got rejected before the fifth time when they finally accepted me (after I got experience in Europe). You need to give it time though, you are so young, and haven't reached the height requirement yet. But when you are ready, New York Models and Marilyn Agency typically takes unconventional beauties, as does the market in Milan, Italy as well. You can go to these places on spring breaks or in the summers. And finally, don't worry that you are in a small town, if an agency picks you up in NY or Europe, you are good to go. THE BEST MODELS COME FROM SMALL TOWNS!! Negotiate with agencies for airfare, hotel and pictures (it's called an advance, you will have to pay it back when you start working), and when you are ready get my book so you can learn how to market yourself and where for now money. I teach the way agents PREFER how to see pictures of new faces.

GOOD LUCK! Don't EVER let anyone tell you that you can't do something or let their negative vibes get to you, just shrug them off because you NEVER KNOW in the modeling industry who is going to be the next up-and-comer!!!! Typical beauty has not been a requirement for a long time. Thanks for blogging, hopefully I'll hear about your success in another year or two!!!! Keep in touch.

Judy Goss said...

Also, Willa, my book gives some great, reputable high fashion modeling agencies in Milan for you to start your search. Just make sure you check with Mom and Dad first, as they are going to have to sign any contracts, etc. until you are 18 years old.

Hey Judy

Im April and I was just wondering how you should dress when you are going to a casting in new york?

Thanks so much !!

Judy Goss said...

Hi April! I'm assuming you are young, and going for modeling in a new faces division (teenage to around 20 years old or so?) because different ages should be dressing slightly differently. Just wear great jeans that fit you really well and a fitted top, t-shirt or fitted sweater is fine. No crazy colors or patterns - keep it really simple. You do not want them to think you are trying too hard - you want to look cool and laid back. Bring heels (unless heels look good with your jeans), NO make-up, except for a little sheer lip gloss and maybe mascara but that is it. No jewelry either, because it is too distracting and can take away from your look. And simple, clean hair. GOOD LUCK!! Let me know what happens. And if you happen to be older, blog again and I will tell you the difference in appearance. Thanks for posting!

gettinthere! said...

Hi Judy, I AM older, (41) and I want to know how to dress for a casting director/agent. I went recently and I agonized over it. I wore a black pencil skirt, a plain black tee shirt, black high heeled boots up to the knee, and a white coat. What should I have worn?
Thanks!
Laura

Judy Goss said...

That sounds perfect! Just remember, if you are going on a casting for a job you need to dress the part of the kind of model they are looking for. For example, if it is a job for a sportswear company, then you will want to wear something sporty and fitted, and not business attire. The outfit you described is perfect for seeing agencies, and you can also take it down a notch and wear nicely fitted jeans, boots and a fitted tee as well. Most importantly, don't wear anything to distracting like neon colors or crazy patterns, because you don't want to take attention away from your face.

The most important mistake not to make for more mature women (older? how do I say that?) is to not dress to much like a junior, it will look like you are trying too hard...and of course my #1 rule: NOT TOO MUCH MAKE-UP! Only cover eye circles and a little powder with sheer lip gloss and a TOUCH of mascara. Good luck!!! Thank-you for posting!!!

Hello there !
I'm 17 this year trying to get into the modelling industry .
I'm from Singapore btw (:
Firstly , I have to get my portfolio done , however , I have no idea how should I start with . Get a photographer and how should I go after that ? Where am I supposed to submit my portfolio to ? What are your advices for me when I goes for photo taking ?

Thanks alot ! (:

Judy Goss said...

Dear Adelaide,

Are you trying to get into a modeling agency in the US or in Singapore? I'm not quite sure what the market out there wants, but I know that in the U.S. (also Europe) you DO NOT NEED professional pictures, just natural shots of your face and body without any make-up and dressed in simple clothing.

Send to modeling agencies a close-up head shot, profile head shot, a 3/4 body shot, and a full-length shot in a bathing suit. These picture should NOT be professional, just taken with a digital camera by a friend or family member, and you should not wear much make-up and keep the clothing VERY simple - the simple the better so nothing distracts from your face or great body!!

How do you find modeling agencies? GOOGLE! Wherever you want to model in the world, Google "model agency new york" or whatever town you are trying to get an agency in. www.models.com has most of the high fashion agencies in New York City, and if you get the modeling agency's name off of the website, you can find THEIR website by Googling the agency name again. Also, there is often a lot of good information on a modeling agency's website, like what kind of pictures they want, or their agent's name and/or email to send your pictures into.

Finally, get my book because you will need it to market yourself! But for the time being, I told you a lot, so start there. GOOD LUCK!! Thanks for posting.

Hi Judy!

The fashion show was INCREDIBLE!! I changed six times and walked the runway 8 times in 30 mintues. The music was very upbeat and I think I did a pretty good job walking toe/heel to the beat.

The dresses were amazing!! I did mention on the 2/25/08 teleconference that I am a size 4 and the dresses I wore were snug and very chic. I was honored enough to wear the most expensive wedding gown in the show. My favorite, though, was a black velvet formal gown with a small train, a slit up to mid-thigh and an open back. It showed every curve for sure! One of the most flattering moments for me came when I was in street clothes departing the conference center. A photographer and make-up artist approached me and asked how long I had worked runway because I obviously "know how to work the runway"! I blushed and my humility showed through when I thanked them.

My agent is working on obtaining copies of the pictures taken so I can begin my portfolio. I have been out on Craigslist (mentioned on the teleconference) and searched for modeling jobs in the Chicago, Kansas City and Minneapolis area as well. I am still researching the photog for my pics however I think I will wait until after I have run the MORE Marathon on April 6 to have the photos taken. Training is brutal and I could still take off 2-3 inches before the race.

Your advice has been WONDERFUL and I cannot wait for the book to come out! I welcome any other advice you have and will blog again soon.

One specific question I have relates to skin care. (You may have noticed from my pic that I love the sun) What are some secrets to that sunkissed look without damaging my skin?

Judy Goss said...

EXCELLENT!!! Good going with the fashion show! YOU ARE ON YOUR WAY TO A MODELING CAREER!! I'm proud of you. I'm glad I could help, that makes me feel really good.

You are doing everything right - local markets are a GREAT way to get work modeling. Have you ever heard of "industrials?" They are corporate training videos which companies book through model agencies. Commercial print divisions know about these videos, and certain areas book them more than others - I bet Minneapolis is great for this - you would have to check around at the agencies. Ask around, they pay well, and are great starting grounds for possibly getting into commercial work...have you thought about tv commercials??

I'm no beauty expert, but there are a lot of creams with self-tanners in them, as well as the self-tanners themselves. Personally, I just wear sunblock on my face and I still get color, but not burned. It all depends on what you prefer. Also, MAC has a pressed sheer powder that is good for color as well as evening out skin tone on your face if you've had sun.

My teleseminar has a link, so you can listen to it again, I will post it on the blog. I also have a website where it is posted: http://www.judygoss.com.

Ok, let me know of your progress here and there, sounds like you are doing GREAT!!

Hi Judy, Congratulations on your book! What a great time I had doing the bathing suit shoot for More! Modeling is something I definitely want to pursue. I would like your advice as to whether I am more fashion or commercial print? What agencies do you recommend I see? Any other advice? Thanks for such a great experience!

Hi, Judy,

I'm in a process of submitting my pictures for modelling agencies. All agencies ask two photos; one is a headshot and the other is a bodyshot. As a woman over 40, do you have any suggestion what type of photo I should choose for a full length bodyshot? What kind of outfit I should wear? Should I wear T-shirt and jeans, suits or day dress? Do I have to wear swimsuit?!!!

Hi Judy,

I'm trying like crazy to further/start my modeling career and am starting to wonder if I'm drinking my bath water about becoming a model. I have the stats and I thought a distinct look but now am wondering if I truely lack any strong facial features to set me apart.

I have been doing 'free' local work with a few designers/MUA/Photographers. I'm not looking to get work/signed locally for my own issues.

I know part of my problem is I don't live by a market and was thinking of going to LA this summer for casting calls.

Every few months I send 3 pols to LA/NY agents. Just recently I get 2 or so requests to send more photos but I never hear anything more. I'm starting to wonder if maybe I'm sending off too many photos. I created a blog to show what pols I've been sending.

The 3 on the left side are what I send on my initial emails. The slideshow is what I send when they request more.

I know I must be sending too many or not the right ones or maybe I need to wait a few years and see how my faces matures.

My stats are on the top of my blog and the URL is http://onecatwalkdiva.blogspot.com/

I would love feedback because what I'm doing isn't working for me right now.

I hope this is specific enough and sorry for the novel....

M (edited by mom ... :-) )

Hi Amelia!

You're welcome!!

First of all, you have the look potentially for BOTH fashion and commercial print modeling. You're the perfect size and height, and have a great look for either one.

I would send your pictures into both of the commercial print and sophisticated divisions of Ford, Wilhelmina, and Bella agencies. Make sure you send separate envelopes to the separate divisions.

And for commercial print, CESD is great as is Abrams, and Model Search. But do your research, as there are many more in New York City that you can target.

GOOD LUCK!! Let me know what happens so we can post your success story and picture on this blog. Keep in touch, Judy

Judy Goss said...

Bamboo,
You SHOULD wear a two-piece bathing suit for the body shot. If you're not comfortable with that, one piece is ok to, but if you really want to wear clothing wear something that is fitted so the agency can see your body type - tight jeans, fitted tank top, etc. but still keep it simple and classy.

GOOD LUCK!

Judy Goss said...

One Catwalk Diva,

First of all, you DO have potential as a high fashion model - not promising anything though of course - and you should hang in there because rejection is 99% of this business. I got rejected from Ford Models FOUR times before I went back a 5th time and got accepted. Keep trying, your age is perfect as modeling agencies want to start girls when they are younger.

Secondly, no modeling agent is going to take the time to look at a "slideshow." At least, not in New York. If someone requests more pictures, you need to either attach 2 or 3 at a time in an email, or get the person's NAME and send it to them by mail.

Not sure if La. is your market, although it doesn't hurt to go to open calls there and see what they say. Did you try an agency named "Bleu?" You have more of an "edgy" look, and need to target edgier agencies. You have a look and body for the runway, which is terrific! And you should be marketing the agencies that can push you for that.

New York City may be more for you, you should try New York Models specifically, DNA and Marilyn Agency.

If you want, you can tell me what agencies you have mailed your pictures to, and who has asked for more so I can tell more easily what kind of market you belong in. But from what I can see, La. is probably not the place for you to start your career.

Thanks for posting!
And thanks Mom for being involved! I think that is great.

Hi Judy,

Thanks for the quick response. It is very much appreciated.

My mistake in doing the slide show. I did that for my blog because I couldn't find an easier way to post all those photos for you to review.

I send off the 3 pols that are on the right side of my blog. If I get a "please send us more photos", then I sent off all the ones in the slide show as attachments (as jpgs).

High Fashion Edgy is exactly what I want. As my screen name suggests I love to walk and show off the designer's clothes. Couture (? spelling) is what I'm looking for.

Judy Goss said...

LOL! I'm a Mom of 3-year old identical twin girls, so I know how Moms can be. ;) She'll be good to have in the loop though, if you start modeling, believe me.

I can't always get to you right away, but I will certainly try...how are you sending the photos? To "info@" mailbox addresses? To specific agents? You've got the right list of agencies, I am just wondering HOW you are sending these photos...you should send them separately to each agency as well, not put all of the addresses all together in the "To" area, or it may come into them as spam or junk mail if you email too many people at once.

Are you sending separate emails to everyone? Try that, and putting your name, age, height and size 2/4 in the subject line so they open it. Also try postal mailing your photos, it doesn't hurt to do it both ways.

And when they ask for more photos, send DIFFERENT ones, like in a different outfit, try getting more artistic with the camera and coming in for a headshot with your hair up, hair down, profile, 3/4 shot, etc. YOU NEED MORE THAT LOOK LIKE THE ONE IN YOUR PONYTAIL - that one is GORGEOUS!! They may think you are sending in the same ones again, because they kind of look the same.

Also, I'm just trying to give you advice, please don't take this the wrong way, but you only really have one expression besides the smiling shots and the pony tail picture. You need to get more "feeling" into the shots...the shots need more "oomph." Try closing your mouth on a few, half smiling with your mouth closed on a few, and looking into the camera like you are shooting for VOGUE Magazine (try raising your eye brows a little?), and you are the most beautiful model in the ENTIRE world...my book goes into all of this, but it's not out until July, and I know you probably can't wait.

One more piece of advice, I noticed you sent your pictures into farther away agencies such as Japan, so why not try Italy where they are known for edgy models and taking chances on new faces? I have sent pictures of girls myself where the agencies advance (meaning, you have to pay back) plane ticket, hotel and pictures for a model portfolio. Think about it, and let me know. Beatrice, Why Not, Women, and Fashion are the legendary ones over there.

And let me know the answers to my questions above so I can help you further.

Thanks for posting! We'll figure it out!! Also, Paris may be an option for you...

I’m going to start feeling like I’m imposing but I’m going for it. Ha – didn’t know the word imposing but my Mom says that’s the word to use.

I sent emails to mostly info@. Some were to a person. Mostly what was said on their websites. I sent an email to each place and didn’t group them at all. The subject line read “Female New Face Submission”.

I bet it’s --- I’ve got the same look in all the pols. I put my hair different, I showed different angles but the eyes are dead or the same expression. LOL!

My mom had me group my pols by expression and boy that was hard. On my blog I’ve got about 4 small slideshows by emotion. There’s one group I couldn’t figure out at all. http://onecatwalkdiva.blogspot.com/

No worries about what you’re saying. It’s all good advice and I need that. So fire away. It gets old not hearing the truth.

I will send off to the Italian places too soon. And work on my expressions in the mirror. Maybe I’ll get my sis to take some pics in the next couple of days when I don’t have a lot of homework.

Twin girls! How cute. I love girls … And 3.

thanks,
M

Judy Goss said...

You're NOT imposing! lol That's why I put this blog up, so people can hear the real truth about breaking into modeling.

Yes, practice makes perfect - get a digital camera and practice and practice!! It really helps. And facial expressions in the mirror help also.

What time of year did you send your pictures? How long ago? All this comes into play, if you sent them during show season, etc, etc. Modeling agencies are so crazed during show season. And definitely putting that info (height, age, etc.) in the subject line will get people to open your email a little faster also.

How long has it been since you sent those pictures? Because you can't send new ones right away in case people DID see your pictures from before...you will seem too desperate. Put some time in between mailings, at least a couple of months, but before the summer so if an agency wants to fly you in for a week or two in the summer, they have time to get you a place, etc.

I bet you'll get some bites from Italy, another good one is Elite in Milan. Also, what about London and Paris? You haven't explored a lot of options there either.

Hang in there!!! You need to keep marketing yourself, you seem really smart so keep trying what you are doing (sending pictures and practicing in the mirror, etc.), with the few changes that I suggested.

OneCatWalkDiva said...

Hi,

I sent my photos off about a month ago or so. I didn’t have the first one in my blog to the top right till about a week ago. I think I sent my front face one with my hair pulled back, the front bathing suit one and one with me smiling and my hair down.

I’ll let you know how Italy goes along with Paris/London. And I’m going to put info on the subject line too ... :-)

I’m also only going to send 2-3 more pictures if they ask for more. On the two requests I got for more pictures I sent like 6 and that was probably not good. I’ll pull some out of the different slideshows on my blog. I hope that will give them a different look that’s good.

Looks like I need to wait till beginning of June to resend emails to LA/NY.

Thanks a lot for all your help and advice. I'll keep in touch.

M (and Mom -- arg! .... :-) )

Hello Judy.
First let me offer my apologies. I sent a blog and did not get a response. I sincerely hope in my excitement to enter the modeling world in some fashion I have not been over zealous in my search for some advice. I would love to model and represent older women. I sent a blog asking if you remembered me from a casting and wether or not you thought I had a chance at some form of modeling. I welcome your comments (negative and positive) and hope that I can pursue this in some fashion. I love the blog thing. Hope I am doing in correctly. I am not to savvy on the computer and apologize for repeated blogs or emails. I have such a passion for the modeling thing that I hope in my excitement over the prospect over it, I have not done a disservice to myself.Hope to hear from you on what you think about sending my pictures to an agency or what type of avenue you think I should or could pursue. Sounds like you sent your photos during the fashion shows in NY which is the craziest time for modeling agencies. I would send again end of April, in case anyone wants you to come in the summer. Then they will have more time to prepare.
And if Mom says you can travel (or she can go with you) put "willing to travel" in the body of your email or on your cover letter. It is really important that a modeling agency know that!

Hi Judy,
How do commercial modeling agencies feel about about receiving one great, airbrushed beauty head shot along with a very natural little makeup pol. headshot to compare it to in the same envelope. This seems like it could go either way to me! They would see how great you CAN look, but then it would really point out every flaw in the poloroid too! I'll defer to your final word on this one. :) Thanks!

Judy Goss said...

The comment I wrote starting with "Sounds like you..." is for ONECATWALKDIVA, by the way.

I try to make it clear when I'm writing to one specific person, but sometimes I forget!

Thanks.

Dear Mary,

You don't have to apologize! But I never received the first posting, and I don't know who you are.

I see hundreds of models on castings and especially when we had open calls for model search, so please forgive me if I can't place you.

If you came to my office to see me, just remind me when it was and I will look you up in my file.

If it was at a model search open call, please tell me what city.

Thanks!
Judy

Dear Lara,

Commercial print modeling? Or tv commercials?

I'm going to assume you mean commercial print, and I'm going to say either market yourself one way or the other. That way, if the picture you sent doesn't get a response, then you can try the other way!! It's a good way to evaluate what is going on, by being specific and target marketing. Sending pictures that are too different in one envelope to a modeling agency is way to mind blowing for a first impression.

Thanks for posting!

Judy, Thank you for the response. I will try to refresh your memory. I was called in for a bathing suit casting in New York. I entered the More model search, was not selected but was lucky enough to have you call from my entry photo to come in for a casting. I did not get the shoot. I did see a couple of other women at the casting call and am sure the right selection for the shoot was made. I am okay with the rejection. I understand it is the nature of the business. I would so very much like to represent fashion for older women. I am very tall.5'9'' and slim. Love fashion and believe I am capable of modeling it in some aspect. My name is Mary. I was reluctant to try the bathing suit shoot but you encouraged me and I did. Hope this information help you to remember who I am. Thank you Mary

Judy Goss said...

Dear Mary,

Ah, yes, I remember you!

Absolutely you should send your pictures into modeling agencies. You look would be more suitable for commercial print. Of course, I can't tell you for sure if you will be successful, you have to figure that out by marketing yourself.

Try Bella Agency, CESD, Abrams, Ford (commercial print), Wilhelmina, and Model Service to start.

Good luck!
Let me know what happens.

Thanks for posting!!!

Judy, I will take your advice and hope for the best. Thankyou so much, for remembering who I was. Hope you keep my picture on file and give me a ring anytime to model fashion for More. Love it. Have a great day!

Hello again Judy, just another question. Your advice was that I would be better suited for commercial print. Could you give me some examples of commercial print. Would that include modeling clothing? I am trying to distinguish the difference Would something like a Talbots ad be commercial or is that considered fashion ? Would I be considering commercial print because of my age or body type? Also, since you did see me I am wondering what would you have me change should I get the opportunity to go to an agency? Thanks so much for your advice. Mary

Judy Goss said...

You're "commercial print" because of your look - you're just not "edgy" enough for high fashion. Your face needs to be a little more angular or distinct. Get my book - I explain everything in there. You just have a look that is more "commercial" - it's not bad, it's just your category. Plus, you have to remember that the sophisticated divisions in fashion modeling have women that have been doing this for 20+ years, and they have tear sheets in their book and experience as well as clients they work for all of the time.

So it's a combination of things, your age, look, and your level of experience.

Yes, commercial print modeling includes some fashion, but mostly it's product modeling as opposed to fashion modeling. But there is catalogue and advertising for fashion clients as well.

Don't change a thing until you get representation at a modeling agency, they are the best ones to look at you and figure out how you should be marketed!! You look great, so don't change anything and good luck to you.

Thanks for posting! I want to hear about your success.

mary said...

Thank you again. Just wanted to clarify the difference between the two. Commercial print would be great. I will get your book and let you know how I make out.In the mean time, hope you keep my picture on file at More and give me a call anytime if you are still interested,(hey! taking your advice and trying to market myself a little here! LOL ) Have a wonderful day. Mary

My name is Claire Pavlinec and I am the current, "Mrs. New Jersey America" (see:www.mrsnewjerseyamerica.com). I would love to break into the industry but at 38 - I feel like my age is in the middle of what everyone is looking for. I am
5'10" and have some experience behind the camera and am very comfortable. I did send out some headshots with no response. What next for someone my age?
Most Gratefully,
Claire

Judy Goss said...

Hello Mrs. New Jersey!

Well, I would have to know more about the when, where and how of what you did to market yourself.

No, you are not "in between" in age, there is a lot of work for someone your age right now! Sometimes sophisticated modeling is referred to as "over 40" but that is not true. Sophisticated modeling actually starts around age 30 and goes up past 80! And in commercial print it is definitely not an issue.

So, let me know what agencies you sent pictures to and give me your measurements so I can tell where you would fit in best. Actually, if you can email me the pictures you sent in that would be a big help: themodelexpert@aol.com. Also, please send pictures without much make-up and a body shot as well, so I can see what you REALLY look like - which most of the time is what agencies want to see.

Oh, and also tell me how long ago you sent them.

Thanks, and I'll speak to you soon!

Thanks for posting.

Hi Judy,

I sent my info off to Milan,UK, Germany, Japan ... a week or so ago and got "No Thanks" responses from the UK. The others nothing. I got my list off of models.com participating agencies. I figure those didn't get anywhere.

Then my mom said that there might be an issue with immigration and that they might mainly look at girls with agencies. Is that true the majority of the time?

I also just sent my photo that's at the top right of my blog and the swimsuit one. I'm going to crop the first one to make it more a headshot type shot and then I plan on redoing the swimsuit. Add a little more personality into it - a variety of poses, pick the best one and send that next time.

But then I also thought that maybe it's what I put in the message that's not good too. I am using your title suggestion on the emails. But for the body of the email I was thinking less is more because the bookers don't want to spend time viewing stuff. So I have:

Name
Height
Bust-Waist-Hip
Shoe
Dres
Hair
Eyes
Skin
DOB:

Willing to travel (have passport)
Contact Phone #:
Contact Email

Do you think that's too much? Do you think I should make it more personal?

Thanks and I love reading what you have to say to the other bloggers too.

M

Judy Goss said...

Hey There Onecatwalkdiva!

If an agency is interested, it doesn't matter WHERE they are in the world, they will contact you and get you a visa or whatever you need.

Didn't I say to wait to send your pictures in again til the end of April? Are these new agencies you just sent pictures into? Because the shows in Europe just ended beginning of March and the next couple of weeks after that is a busy time for Europe.

Yes, you should make your email a little more personal, but you are so right - don't go on and on.

And by the way, you only sent your pictures out a WEEK ago, and you're already being negative? You need to give it time - you may get a call in a month or so from an agency asking for more pictures, you never know. Give it time and be patient, agents from model agencies are CRAZY busy. Sometimes when I was an agent I didn't even have time to get up from my chair to go to the bathroom! It's true.

Besides the fact that (don't know if I told you this already) Ford rejected me 4 times before they accepted me finally from their agency in Miami, so you have to keep trying. But don't re-send pictures TOO soon after because you will look desperate - space them out by AT LEAST a few months. The dynamics of a modeling agency are constantly changing, from the bookers to the owners, so you have to keep trying.

Also, your age may be a factor, especially with the foreign agencies - you never know.

You need to hang in there, this business is TOUGH to break into! Learning to bounce back and hang in there is a big lesson, ask anyone in the business. And it still happens when you get an agency - casting directors and phographers will reject you right and left until you get a job.

One more tip, I just looked at your pictures again and I don't like the one where you are looking over your shoulder, mouth is closed. There is no confidence in those eyes, like the one on the top right where your looking at the camera like,"EXCUSE ME?" Also, you can lean towards looking "commercial" - more like a cheerleader, and you have to stay away from that if you want to market yourself as an edgy catwalker.

OneCatWalkDiva said...

Hi Judy,

Thanks for all the feedback and taking the time.

I think we're good. I only sent out pictures to the European market about a week ago and I never had done that before (excluding the 2 or so I sent previously to Japan). I didn't realize it was thier busy time too. Me bad!

I've been sending my pictures out for over 6 months now (2-3 times)and felt something was off. Being able to get your tips and to confirm a few things is really helping to 'center' me and I really appreciate your effort.

Yikes -- forgot about the blog pictures. I've got that mess all cleaned up now too. Phew....

Happy Easter and I hope the bunny brings all kinds of fun stuff to the girls.

I have a question....this past week I was contacted by a management agency that is affiliated with Wilhelmina regarding doing some mature modeling. She procured my photo thru the More modeling search contest. I met with them over the weekend and was told that I would be a good fit for their mature modeling needs. They would like me to invest in the pictures and a photo workshop in order to create the composite cards for advertising. I guess I am always leary about paying anyone for anything..is this commonplace in the industry?

Judy Goss said...

Dear Colleen,

You are SMART not to pay anything!!

What does that mean, "affilliated?"

There is certainly no reason for you to have a model "manager" at your age when you can just send in pictures to agencies yourself, and they do not need to be professional pictures.

I say "at your age" because sometimes it's good for younger girls to have managers when they are building their careers for high fashion modeling work.

How much did they ask you to pay? And also, how did they get your pictures? I'm not sure I understand, did Wilhelmina give them your picture? And if Wilhelmina was interested, why haven't they contacted you directly?

Let me know the answers to these questions, and I can figure out better how to better respond to your query.

Thanks for posting!

If you want to email me, my email is:
themodelexpert@aol.com

colleenmallory said...

Judy,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I entered the Wilhelmina modeling contest through More magazine and they received my picture thru their affiliation with Wilhelmina. I am not certain what they mean by affiliation, however I was apt to believe they have some sort of relationship with Wilhelmina because she did indeed have my picture that I sent to More magazine. I am definitely not sure how to proceed and I feel confused. They actually call themselves S-2 Management Wilhelmina and this is out of Columbus, Ohio. They asked me to sign up for this photo workshop with some man that comes from NYC and teaches movement, picture info, etc. The cost for that workshop was $250.00. The pictures, composite cards, etc. totals around a $1,000.00 investment to get started. She encouraged me to check it out, so that is what I am attempting to do, however my ignorance is getting in the way. I appreciate your expertise.

Judy Goss said...

Hi Colleen!

Did they call you off of the information that was on your application for the More/Wilhelmina Model Search?

How tall are you, and what dress size?

The workshop is definitely not needed, I wish my book was out because I teach people all they need to know about the modeling industry in it! You can learn how to "move" by just going through magazines and cataloges and observing how models move, then practicing in the mirror and with a digital camera.

It's true, you DO need to invest money in pictures to model, but you do NOT need to pay money to get an agency. There is a very fine line here...did they tell you that you HAVE to pay money to them to model? Or were they just trying to tell you about how much investing in yourself would be?

I'm sorry I keep asking so many questions, I'm just trying to figure out if you are being taken advantage of, or if the person telling you all of this info is just trying to describe what you would be getting into.

If an agency selects you, usually you can take pictures with 1 - 2 photographers and that will be enough to start. BUT if you are going for commercial print, sometimes professional photos are NOT a priority. The largest commercial print agency in NYC sends people out with non-professional pictures and no book all of the time! I don't know the Columbus market all that well, but I DO know that if you have potential, you can get an agency without paying money or taking a workshop, and once you get in you pay the PHOTOGRAPHER for your pictures. Sometimes agencies (scammers) will take your money and give a portion of it to the photographer, and pocket some for themselves.

So you see, it's complicated, but I will help you through this!!!

It looks to me that you have a choice of agencies in Columbus, so you should look around and see what other people are saying about you.

So, let me have the answers to the second round of questions, and I can better figure out what's going on here.

I can also send you a list of other agencies in Columbus, if you are not comfortable with that one.

Thanks!
Judy

colleenmallory said...

Judy,

The information that they have is all from the More model search. The agency clearly had the form I sent in along with my photo. I brought the same photo with me to the appointment along with a smiling shot and she said, 'Oh, I already have that one, but could I keep the smiling photo?' I am
5'5" and she seemed to like that for mature print work. I wear a size 6 dress. She did mention that they set up the photographer, however you pay the photographer directly on the photo shoot day. The workshop fee is $250.00 and you pay that directly to them. There is an additional fee of $250.00 to be listed in the online electronic booking fee that is to be paid annually. You keep 80% of any bookings and they keep 20%. She did not tell me that I had to pay them money to model. She was very upfront during our meeting and even suggested that I check everything out for myself. So here I am...I appreciate your expertise.

Colleen

Judy Goss said...

Colleen,

Ok, they sound legit, but you don't need the workshop, and you shouldn't be paying more than $500 - $600 to test with a photographer including hair and make-up, and the photographer should be shooting you with more than one "look." (A "look" is a change of clothes) You should be getting 2 - 3 looks at that price.

Hopefully the agent was estimating the "$1,000" as including composite printing and laser copies as well. It is an investment, but you could try asking them if you can start with your non-professional pictures and go on a few castings to see what clients think first...? It's just an idea, I'm not sure how much work there is for someone who is 5'5" and living in Columbus.

The photographer should also be able to tell you what to wear, and what kind of shots he/she is going to take (and the agent can help you with this as well).

Wilhelmina NY is buying satellite agencies around the nation, so they have agencies all over the place, and S2 is one of the agencies that they have acquired or licensed their name out to them.

The other fee of the website is standard, and the agency getting 20% is standard as well.

CONGRATULATIONS!! It sounds like you are on your way to becoming a model!!

Any other questions, please post a comment or email me.

Good luck!
Judy

Hello Judy,While reading your blog I am noticing that you tell aspiring models to ask alot of questions to the agency, and to keep trying. Would that include the booking agent? I ask because of the email I have sent. I have not gotten a response and was hoping that by emailing I have not done something you would have advised me not to do. Just wanted to let it be known that I was would still be interested in modeling. Do you think that by doing so, it has made a wrong impression? My thought was, hey at this age go for it! I would never have thought to e-mail a booking and casting director in my twenties! I feel like I should just put it out there to be a reminder so I would not be forgotten in all of the people you see throughout your day. I was confident that I was doing the right thing. However, if you think it was or is not the right thing please let me know. Thank you still waiting for the book and I just wanted to let you know how much I do enjoy this blog, You seem to really take a genuine interest in people. A trait sometimes hard to find. Thanks so much. Mary

Judy Goss said...

You can email the agent, but not too much. If you gave them 3 - 4 weeks and they haven't responded, then you can check in, but no more than that.

It's always better to just re-submit your pictures again in two months, or re-submit your pictures to a different agent in two months, but I know people get excited and just want to KNOW.

Hopefully the email you sent was only one or two lines, and just that you wanted to know either way...?

It's such a fine line when people just want to check - in with the agent, because the reason you are not hearing from them could be that they are genuinely too busy at the moment, or that you just aren't the right look for their agency.

Mostly people will not get a response if the agent isn't interested, because they just do not have time to get back to everyone. One of the agencies that I recently spoke to said they get about 100 pictures a week!!!

So, you just need to re-strategize if you don't hear from them within a few weeks.

Thanks for the compliment! Yes, I truly love helping people through this process because there is SO much that people don't know, and everyone has a different look and situation for getting into the modeling industry or not.

Thanks for posting!
Judy

Judy, Thanks for the response. Yes I did just what you said, only a few lines to let it be known I was still interested. That makes me feel better to know it was okay to do. Dear Mary,

OH-I saw "agent" and I thought you meant an agent in a modeling agency! LOL

I thought I responded to all of your emails...? We aren't casting for "real people" at the moment but just know that as soon as we do you will be one of the first women that I call! Really-I wouldn't say that unless I really meant it.

Hi Judy,

I was looking over one of the links on your blog - FashionHow seminars.

Do you think this seminar would be a good idea? How is it different from modeling conventions/competitions? If you say yes - do you think one location would be better than another? How does this seminar add to or differ from your book?

It's getting closer to your book release .... how exciting!

thanks,
Morgan

Judy Goss said...

Dear Morgan,

Yes, I wouldn't have posted Fashion How if I didn't believe in it. It's a seminar on other careers in the modeling/fashion industry, so if you ever want to get into other types of work (because remember, modeling doesn't last forever!) this is a good resource.

It differs from my book in that it is focused more on all kinds of careers, not just modeling. My book is specifically how to market yourself as a model, as well as general modeling industry tips, and the careers seminar is more about "other" careers in the fashion industry.

I'm going to ask Fashion How to post here to answer your other questions, because I'm not sure about the locations, etc.

Thanks again for posting!
