How can you tell if a modeling agency is legit or not?

I've been interviewing recently for the release of my new book (in case you haven't heard it's "Break Into Modeling for Under $20" - SHAMELESS plug!) and several times I went on the air with people who call-in and ask me questions regarding the modeling industry. One of the most frequent questions I get is "How do I know a modeling agency is legit?"

Well, one of the best ways is to ask the models who are already with the agency what they think of the agency, and what work they have booked. Also, check the Better Business Bureau for complaints.

Since some of my regular bloggers are not from the New York area, I would LOVE to hear some of the great agencies out there that people can count on as being legitimate.

I'll start - I LOVE the Diamond Agency in Orlando, Florida!!!! They started Mandy Moore's career way back when, and work hard and are honest.

Others??

Although this is slightly off subject, it is related. When I was in my 20's (I'm 57 now) the worst thing I did was to go to one of the "modeling schools", widely advertised for thousands of dollars. The sales pitch was hooked me was "learning how to walk the runway like a model"(and of course the salesperson showed me how) and the other pitch was: "...our school has you enter a contest with the Wilhemina modeling agency..." That happened(the contest) but no one was chosen from the "school" to go onto a career in New York with that agency. Yet the sales pitch made it sound like that would happen. So my advice to the young girls out there is to read websites like this one and to ask "real models" what they recommend and also to be realistic. If an experienced model doesn't think it will be easy for you on an international level, you may want to consider working in some related field in the industry...I only wish someone had told me.
Thanks for the website. I just read about it in MORE magazine.

Hi Sandra!

THANK-YOU for your comments!!

That is exactly the reason I wrote the book - this is happening to too many people. We need to spread the word to EVERYONE out there!!!

The right and PREFERRED way to break into modeling is to NOT PAY MONEY, and it is the hardest thing for people to understand. Modeling agents actually PREFER people do not spend money trying to break into modeling (i.e. getting agency representation).

Thank-you for sharing your story!

We are getting the word out there - people are getting smart about all of this now, and it's great to see.

My questions is... everyone says "DO NOT PAY ANYTHING" but some of these agencies want you to pay for pictures in order to manage or represent your child. Does this fall into that category...

Do not pay anything upfront.

And the answer to your question depends on how old your child is, if he/she is modeling or acting, etc. but GENERALLY you do not need professional pictures at first - my daughters' manager told me to use headshots I took, then make 8X10's out of them!!

This is my situation... I took my daughter (5yrs old) to a modeling agency "modelscout" in Orlando FL, they called us back saying that they liked her and now they want to us to prefessional shots of her. They said they can schedule an appt to bring in aphotographer from NY and have these pictures taken and the ciost is $450.00 and comp cards for $275. After that they will represent her - How does this sound to you?
